4. Meet the Theologian

Wow, it’s hard to use that word for yourself without sounding presumptuous. But then again, if theology is the “study of God,” isn’t every Christian a theologian to one degree or another? Let’s hope so.

My name is Aaron Michael Brewster. I’m a teacher at Schaumburg Christian School in Schaumburg, IL.

I accepted Jesus Christ to be my personal Savior when I was nine (I lived in MN at the time) and dedicated my life to the Lord when I was 11 (I lived in MO at the time). Unfortunately I wasn’t always the best example of a believer . . . neither in word nor deed. I knew God wanted me serving Him in full-time Christian service, but I wasn’t serious about my relationship with Him.

My family moved around a lot (as you can tell) so I never was at one church for very long. But in 1992 we move to Sterling Heigths, MI and started attending First Baptist Church of Troy. If you’re ever in the area and need a good church . . . stop by. The pastor is Dr. Mike Harding and he preaches the Word of God without pulling a single, sanctified punch. Under the mature supervision of FBCT I started to realize how un-christlike I was being, but it wasn’t until college that the Lord got me back on track . . . with a very large paddle.

It was 1998 (I lived in MI at the time) I packed up my things and traveled down to Bob Jones University (SC) for my freshmen year. I majored in Camp Ministries. My first semester of my sophmore year I was a music minor, but I changed it the second semester to Interpretative Speech.

My years at BJU were outstanding. I experienced an unprecedented amount of spiritual growth; most of which had to do with the simple fact that for the first time in my life I had a consistent devotional life. The stories are long, but they’re filled with praise after praise for the way God revolutionized my life.

During my education I took two summers to work at The WILDS Christian Camp and Conference Center in Brevard, NC. I loved it! That place is amazing. Doc Haye, Rand Hummel, Ken Collier, Matt Herbster, and Mac Lynch are some of the most godly Christians I know and I thank them for the ministry each of them have had in my life.

After I graduated from BJ in 2003, I went back to persue a Masters in Counseling. That year I met the girl who would become my wife. Johanna Faith Porter and I met while performing in a play at Bob Jones. JohannaJohannaI was the Gryphon in Alice in Wonderland and she was the makeup artist for the production . . . and the rest is history. We were married on 12th Night (Jan 6th) 2006. We now have a son, Micah.

 Me             Johanna              Micah

But let’s go back to 2003 for moment. I was pleased to discover Johanna’s family was in full-time Chrisian service. Her great-grandfather was the evangelist, Ford Porter. He wrote a tract called God’s Simple Plan of Salvation. Her parents now run Lifegate, the organization that produces the tract. All of this was very exciting to me because I knew she was already involved in the work of the Lord. Over the next few years our relationship grew and blossomed. We attended Mount Calvary Baptist Church, pastored by Dr. Mark Minnick. Once again, if you’re ever in the area . . . you know what to do. I’d say that if Spurgeon was the Prince of Preachers, Pastor Minnick may well be the King of Preachers. God has gifted him immensly and my wife and I grew so much under his watch-care.

In 2005 I finnished my grad work and Johanna completed her undergrad. We started looking for a ministry immediately. Even though my degree had been camp ministries, and even though I loved The WILDS immensly, the Lord had been drawing my heart in another direction . . . the Christian School. Finnaly, in August of 2007, my wife and I joined the staff of Schaumburg Christian School, a ministry of Bethel Baptist Church in Schaumburg, IL.

I’m currently teaching 6th grade and Johanna teaches preschool.

We’re overjoyed, thrilled, enraptured, and bursting at the seams to be serving God in a full-time capacity. I’m also excited by this blog. I’ve been a writer for many years. I write poetry and I do a lot of writing in the areas of Christian Living, Love/Relationships, Biblical Counseling, and Youth Work. This site gives me an opportunity to use God’s Word to make a difference in people’s lives . . . and that’s what it’s all about.

“Go ye therefore into all the world and preach the gospel!”

So that’s me. I hope your time here at Taking Back the Bible draws you closer to the Lord.

    Aaron,

Followed your link from de-Conversion…Just wanted to let you know that I greatly appreciated the comment you left there tonight. Admittedly, we come from completely opposite ends of the spectrum that is the Body of Christ. But I am honored to know that I have such a bold brother in Christ as you. For the record, I’m currently attending seminary in Grand Rapids, MI. My wife and I plan to move back to Oregon when I’m finished and hopefully plant a church, God willing. I wish you God’s blessings as you minster to those around you through your teaching.

    God bless,

    Jason

Nice to see how deluded you are. By eight I knew there was no god. I went through 12 years of Christian/Catholic schools and still came out an atheist. Why is that?

Maybe because the schools I attended taught us critical reasoning skills, skills against which the Bible can never stand up.

First of all, God never argues His existence.

Second of all, God never forces Himself on anyone. He’s not going to make you believe. You chose to reject Him. He allows you to do so. I wish you hadn’t (but you can still change your mind).

Third of all, your “critical reasoning skills” use a human brain as their starting and ending points. We know humans only use about 10-12% of that brain. We also know that human beings make millions of mistakes every day. Does that sound like a system of “critical thought” you want to be part of?

God is perfect and all-powerful. His reasoning is perfect. His commands and expectations are perfect. That’s the kind of stuff the Bible is made out of. That’s the kind of stuff I’m going to base my reasoning skills off of.
